I have a confession to make: I’m as obsessed about aesthetically gorgeous tech in my home as I am about the decorative stuff that fills it and serves no other purpose. I’ve always been adverse to gigantic speakers in boldly hued plastics or indeed towering, metallic sound systems, they just jar with me. Hence my preoccupation with SMEG, Dualit and KitchenAid, kitchen gadgets that have a clear design aesthetic, great curves and do what they’re supposed to do. Today however, I’m exploring the world of sound, basically because my other love is music, and well let’s face it, if the gadgets look great but don’t service the sound, then it’s a big fat fail. With modernist, scandi and retro aesthetics being so popular and headphones part of any discerning music lovers accessory look, this is an indulgence of a post for fellow music lovers.
In the home… whether you tuck your speakers away or like them on show like this magnificent retro system, the truth is design plays as much a part in choice now as sound. Splurgetastic beauty R7 £2000, Ruark Audio
Ta da … an alternative finish close up.
A good looking portable option to break out your vinyl to – the sound quality isn’t quite on a parity with the above, but Crosley’s portable players have become a bestselling option. £59.99, Crosley Cruiser Turntable at John Lewis.
